Five days of catchup for thirty days of thanks

November 5, 2009 by lynnery

Well, today is November 5 and I’m just getting started!   When I was in school, I loved to write, and was very good at it, so in a sense it is suprising that it has taken me all these years to pick it up again (other than journal entries and letters).  In all honesty, it feels weird to be typing at a keyboard instead of putting pen to paper.   Even in college, when other people had started doing all their papers on a PC, I wrote on unlined paper with a very specific kind of black pen, and then typed up the final draft on my Brother typewriter.   Whiteout was my savior.

For today I’m just going to keep it simple and start with a list of five things I’m thankful for,  one for each of the five days this month.
1. Autum foliage.  Brilliant colors lining the streets and highways, that make driving around to run errands much less mundane, and something to celebrate.  Leaves that crunch underfoot as we walk through the neighborhood to play at the park.  The smell of fall–that sweet, crisp, welcome home smell that you only get this time of year, when the leaves are newly fallen and the nights have just begun to be chilly.

2. Coffee.   Oh, there is so much I love about coffee!  The sound of the beans rattling around in the bag as I pick it up to pour some into the grinder.  The whir of the grinder as it turns the beans into fragrant, coarse, promising powder.  The froth that forms as the hot water splashes into the French press.  The brown warmth of that first sip.  Mmmm….
Coffee is safety and comfort.  Coffee smells like home.

3. Good friends.  There’s a lot that could be said here but… Good friends.   ’Nuff said.

4. Books.  I can’t imagine life without books.  Don’t want to!

5. Cobalt blue glass bottles.  If you’ve been in my kitchen, you know what I’m talking about!   They are just so blue and beautiful and, well, they make me happy!

There you have it.  My first blog.  ‘Nuff said.
